Men in the US will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a doctor with expertise in male sexual health, a FDA advisory panel said in ahoe.
The FDA advisory said men who have tried Viagra can take the drug for up to six months after their first dose, or until they stop taking it, after consulting with a doctor about their sexual needs.
The FDA panel said it found that around one in three men who take Viagra don't report feeling their erections were blocked after six months of treatment.
The panel said it's important for men to talk to their doctors about their sexual needs and how they'll respond to Viagra.
Viagra is an FDA approved treatment for erectile dysfunction.
More than 1,300 men between the ages of 18 and 60 took the drug for the first time, the panel said.
About 1,000 of those men took Viagra at least once during their first month of treatment, but half of those men said they felt they didn't want to take the drug again.
The FDA advisory panel will look at whether men who took Viagra for six months or longer were more likely to experience erectile dysfunction.
The panel also will decide on whether men should see a doctor who may advise them on the treatment.
Men who took the drug for a year or more and who reported that they felt their erections were blocked after six months of treatment had an increased risk of developing erectile dysfunction, the panel said.
The increased risk was due to men who used Viagra more than twice, compared with half of the men taking Viagra who didn't use the drug.
Viagra was approved in the US in 2003 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and is now available as an over-the-counter medication.
In the US, the drug was sold under the brand name Levitra, but it was first introduced as Viagra Connect in the late 1990s.
A spokeswoman for the FDA said the agency's advisory panel will consider whether men who took the drug for six months or longer were more likely to experience erectile dysfunction.
The FDA said it did not have enough data to say how many men were affected by erectile dysfunction, but it could provide data for men who may have been at higher risk of the condition.
Viagra is available in a variety of dosages, including 50mg, 100mg and 200mg.
Viagra has been linked to more than 2,000 cases of erectile dysfunction in men aged 18 and over in the US and more than 2,000 cases in other countries.
The FDA said it found a link between the drug and sexual dysfunction in more than one in every 1,000 men between the ages of 18 and 60.

• Are experiencing a heart attack, stroke or blood vessel disease
• Are experiencing low blood pressure
• Are taking other medicines that affect blood pressure
• Are taking other medicines for erectile dysfunction
• Are on a treatment for premature ejaculation or low levels of sexual desire in men
• Are taking any other erectile dysfunction medication

The panel did not rule out the use of nicotine gum or alcohol as a smoking device.
